How To Pray For Our Missionaries

Below are a few tips about how you can best minister to your missionaries through prayer:
1. First, learn all about your missionary and their location
  • Get a map and look up the country, area, and town (if possible) and mark the location
  • Research climate and living conditions in that location
  • Research the kind of government and religious practices of the area
  • Learn about the languages spoken in that location
  • Learn the names and birthdays of the missionary’s family (spouses and children)
  • Inquire about their specific physical needs (support, outfit, special equipment, etc.)
2. Secure a prayer card and keep it displayed as a reminder
3. Then, get to work and start praying
Pray for their physical and practical needs:
  • Adjustment to the field, especially if going out as new workers (climate; living conditions: food, housing, insects; new culture, customs, and language)
  • Health of your missionary and their family. (Newly arrived missionaries frequently suffer from illnesses due to change of climate, water and food)
  • Education of the children
Pray for their emotional needs:
  • Separation anxiety and loneliness
  • Family stress as children struggle with a totally new life
  • Relationships with fellow missionaries
  • Marriage stresses
  • Single missionaries have special needs that are often overlooked but need to be included and supported in their emotional needs
  • Learning to love sometimes unlovable people all around them
Pray for their spiritual needs:
  • Deep constant commitment to the Lord and His call for them
  • Daily walk and communion with the Lord
  • A source of Bible study and growth outside of the “job”
  • Vibrant prayer life
  • Strength to resist temptations
4. Communicate with your missionary family
Write, send little gifts (if feasible- check with them or missionary headquarters first). Some missionaries are better communicators than others and you may or may not hear much from them directly. Don’t let that affect your faithfulness.
